The Law is NOT Done Away With

Updated: Jan 27, 2023

I know you’ve probably heard the famous saying “the law is done away with”, or “Jesus fulfilled the law for us, so we don't have to keep it”. Well, what if I told you that wasn’t true…

Imagine this: you're speeding down the highway and get pulled over. You receive a ticket for breaking the law and now you have to pay a fine to the King. It’s not a cheap ticket though, you realize it's way too much for you to pay! You try everything in your power to gather up enough money to pay it..washing cars, picking up two jobs, but it’s still not enough. Soon enough you start to lose hope. Nothing is working! Until one day, the King's Son comes along and pays the fine for you!

HalleluYah, what a relief! You’re ecstatic, you’re filled with joy. This fine that was too much for you to pay was just paid off in full. Your debt is cleared.

Now, what should you do next?

Go out and continue speeding down the freeway again?

or

Go out and try your best not to break the law again?

Hopefully you didn’t choose the first option. That would be quite disrespectful to the King and His Son. If you continue to break the law and speed, that would be what’s called: “taking His mercy for granted”. Compare Yah to the King and Yahayasha to His son, the debt payer. Now, how much more should we not do this?

You may be asking, what about Romans 7:6 when Paul states, “But now we have been released from the law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter.”

When Paul states this, He is never saying that the teachings of the law itself are dead, but the rulership of it is. What Paul is basically saying here, is this:

That we are not bound by the law as a teacher. The Ruach (Holy Spirit) is our new teacher, but the teaching of the law itself is not done away with.

If you keep reading, he states in verse 7 & 12 that the teachings of the law are not sin and are good:

"What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You shall not covet.” Romans 7:7

"Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good." Romans 7:12

Also, he even says in Romans 3:31 how as believers we should establish the law:

"Do we then make void the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish the law." Romans 3:31

When it comes to Paul’s teachings, Timothy tells us we must be very careful with it because His teachings can be difficult to understand:

”…our beloved brother-in-law Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.” 2nd Peter 3:15-16

Furthermore, there was a scenario in Acts 25, where Paul actually admits to the Jewish counsel that he was never telling the new converts to reject the law, but instead to go about a new way of learning it. Paul was telling these new converts to learn the principles of the law from the Holy Spirit now. Paul was never telling people to reject what they already know and have been taught. To prove that he was never saying this, he even takes these new converts to go and be circumcised.

To make things easier, think of it like this:

You’re learning how to drive, so you attend driving school. In this school, there’s no teacher, they just give you a textbook and you have to learn everything through the content in the textbook. One day, the school sees that you're not performing that well, but you are really trying to learn. They decide to send in a teacher to better instruct you on how to drive instead. This makes it much easier for you to learn how to drive! You can learn from a more understandable source, versus only a textbook. Now, does that mean that the things taught in the textbook are wrong? Are they now non-applicable? No! The fundamentals of driving a car are always the same. You simply just have a new way of learning the same information. Same info, different way of learning.

This makes sense because Malachi 3:6 tell us that Yah (God) does NOT change:

"For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed." Malachi 3:6

So then,

Did Yah create the law, say it’s perfect, then tell us not to keep it because it’s imperfect (sinful)? No! Christ says think NOT that I’ve come to destroy the law and prophets.

"Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil." Matthew 5:17

Did Yah ever tell us that since Christ fulfilled the law, that means we don’t have to keep it anymore? No, never! We are told to be Christ-like, meaning we should be walking in His footsteps, keeping the law just as He did.

Does scripture state that the law is perfect? Yes!

"The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple." psalm 19:7

Does scripture state that by keeping the law we are saved? No! We should do our best to obey Yah's commands, but we are not saved just by keeping the law. Doing your best to keep it is not enough to cover your debt for breaking it. Only by having faith in Hamashiach (Christ) are we redeemed for our breaking of the law AKA sinning.

"Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified." Galatians 2:16

These laws are for the Israelites and according to Galatians 3:7 you can become an Israelite (child of Abraham) by faith:

"Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham."

so these commands & laws are applicable to you too if you’re a follower of Hamashiach (Christ).

According to Matthew 7:23, on judgment day, those who broke His law will be cast out:

“And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” KJV

Iniquity means lawlessness and if you read different translations of this verse it will say lawlessness:

“And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!” NKJV

Another key thing to remember is that the word sin literally means "transgression of the law of God" (Merriam-Webster, 2022) and we all know we are not called to sin.

This means we are not called to transgress against the law!

If we were now allowed to break the law, then why would Yah punish the law breakers on judgment day? This is the reason we needed a form of atonement in the first place.

To sum up, as Yahayasha stated, the law isn't done away with. Yah through His mercy equipped us with a new teacher (His set apart Spirit), so that we can better keep the law, so we can be more Christ-like. Remember that you are not justified by the law though, but through your faith in Christ. You should obey His law out of a heart of love.

"If ye love me, keep my commandments."John 14:15

Hopefully this makes sense and clears up some misconceptions. Stay seeking the truth and stay repentant, many are called and few are chosen.

If this has helped you, please share this post! Let's clear up the confusion that the enemy has caused.
